South Jersey Expansion: Double Nickel Brewing
As of 2020, Liberty Brew Tours is officially touring in South Jersey. The LBTSJ series shares our first experiences with our new brewing partners on our South Jersey expansion !
Overview
Double Nickel Brewing is just over the bridge(s) in Pennsauken Township, NJ. It’s sort of in a circle, or a roundabout, or turnaround, or whatever name they give confusing traffic concepts in New Jersey. It’s also a production facility, which was a significant contrast to the other locations the Liberty crew had been visiting on our first South Jersey expedition. Most of the South Jersey tour had been spent at neighborhood breweries, but Double Nickel is big. The spacious, expansive taproom borders the brewery allowing for easy viewing through the glass windows. The beer garden is ideal for warmer-weather events, and gives guests even more space to spread out when it’s open.
Our hostess for the night, Christine, gave us an introduction to DNB and their unique beer selection.
The Beer!
Double Nickel was the only brewery on our South Jersey foray that distributes regularly into Philadelphia. On location, though, they’ve got everything – including…
Nocturnal Creatures – A 6 hour boil ? That’s pretty wild, given that 1-2 hours is a standard timeframe. This big, 13% pastry stout has tons of coconut, vanilla, and chocolate.
Coast to Coast – A bright, juicy New England IPA with minimal bitterness. One of the favorites of the day.
Saint Nickel’s Pickle – Yes, it’s a pickle beer ! Super salty with a pickle brine flavor. Another favorite of the day, but this is definitely a love-it-or-hate-it kind of beer. As professionals we can tell you it’s excellent, though.
Conclusion
Double Nickel is a must-visit for multiple reasons. The beer list is more adventurous than most spots. The location itself is beautiful. Plus, when spring rolls around that beer garden is going to be open. We wouldn’t wait, though – the pickle juice might be gone by then.
