South Jersey expansion: Devil’s Creek ! As of 2020, Liberty Brew Tours is officially touring in South Jersey. The LBTSJ series shares our first experiences with our new brewing partners !
Overview
Devil’s Creek Brewery resides in yet another adorably quaint South Jersey town – this time it’s Collingswood, NJ. Devil’s Creek is right in the heart of downtown, surrounded by restaurants and other community-based spots. Our host and owner, Kathy, showed us around the digs and poured out a vast array of award-winnings beer for us to sample. DC usually has 12 on tap, and we weren’t leaving until we tried them all !
The Beer!
We had some seriously excellent beer at Devil’s Creek. From a simple Kolsch to Nessie (A wee heavy), there’s something for everyone here. I want to focus on two beers in particular, though:
The caramel apple brown ale is an unassuming sounding brew. There are plenty of brown ales, and usually the ‘caramel’ refers to a malty flavor. This is much different, though. Rather than a malty hit, the flavor profile is liquid caramel, like melted down candy. The sweetness is balanced by both mild hops, and the crisp tartness of apple. The best way I can describe this beer is a caramel-infused apple cider ale. It’s seriously unique and worth the trip just to check it out. It’s no surprise it took first place at the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival in 2019.
The other beer is Mega 88, a retro-fitted version of 1888 Old Ale. Standard Old ales are relatively uncommon, but winter warmers are a variant often seen during the holidays. This particular old ale has been infused with strawberry and some peppery heat for a great blend of malt, fruit, and spiciness. It’s yet another reason to visit.
Conclusion
Devil’s Creek has got some awards under its belt, and with good reason. If you haven’t been here yet, it’s time to stop by !
